What Is a Book of Centuries?
A Book of Centuries is one of the most beloved tools in a Charlotte Mason education. A Charlotte Mason Book of Centuries is a timeline book where students record people, events, discoveries, and ideas century by century, gradually building a living, visual picture of history over years of study.
Traditionally, a Book of Centuries uses a two-page spread to represent one century. We have chosen to build upon that idea by providing additional space for the periods of history for which we now have more detailed records and information. Ancient and Classical civilizations, as well as the Middle Ages, follow the traditional two-page-per-century format. Beginning with the Age of Exploration and Colonization, however, each two-page spread represents fifty years, allowing students more room to record the increasing number of people and events they encounter.
Getting Started
A Book of Centuries is a personal timeline that grows alongside a student's studies. As they encounter historical figures, inventors, artists, explorers, and important events, they can record names, dates, places, and brief notes within its pages. Many students enjoy adding small sketches, symbols, maps, quotations, or illustrations to represent what stood out to them.
There is no single right way to keep a Book of Centuries. The goal is not to create a perfect record, but to make history personal, meaningful, and memorable. Over time, the pages become a handcrafted account of everything a student has studied—and perhaps most importantly, a place where they begin to see connections between people, events, and ideas across the centuries.
Tips for Using It Well
Work in it consistently. Even one entry each week adds up beautifully over the years. I find it helpful to mention upcoming entries at the beginning of the week and then schedule time for Book of Centuries work during our family studies later in the week.
Let your child own it. Their handwriting, sketches, and choices are what make it meaningful.
Use it across subjects. Scientists, composers, artists, explorers, and inventors all have a place within the timeline of history.
Think long-term. Remind students that this is something they may enjoy sharing with their own children one day.
